I'm Will. I grew up in Sumter, South Carolina, lived in New York before
moving to California. I came to ceramics attending the College of San
Mateo. Walking between classes, I used to pass the ceramics lab. "At
some point," I told myself, I'm going to take a class." I eventually sign
up for a class, at first I didn't enjoy the class but the clay won me over.
I transferred to San Jose State University, where I earned B.A. degree
in Sociology and M.A. in ceramics.
After earning my teaching credential at San Jose, I took a six week trip to African visiting the countries of Ghana, Liberia, and the Ivory Coast.
My work reflects these travels.
Today, I have retired as a high school teacher, and now co-owner of
Black Bean Ceramic Art Center. My work is hand built, some are incised
with decorative line, and others are rubbed with mineral oxides. Some
are burnished, others left with a natural surface. All are fired in sawdust
or vegetable materials. which lets each piece tell the story of the fire as well as the maker's hand.
